Farrely, Frawley, O’ Farrell, O’ Farrely, O’ Ferrall, Ó Fearghaíl

The modern Farrells, and variations on the name, are descended from the sept of Ó Fearghaíl which was located at Annaly in Co. Longford. The name of the county actually comes from the Clan name, its full Gaelic name being Longphuirt Uí Fhearghaíll, ‘O’ Farrell’s fortress’. The name comes from the personal name Fearghal, meaning man of valour. The Farrell name is now the 35th most numerous name in Ireland. It is most commonly found in the province of Leinster in the east of the country, particularly counties Longford, Meath and Westmeath.
