Mac Domhnaill, Mac Donnell, Mc Donnell
Mac Domhnaill comes from the personal name Domhnall, made up of two words meaning ‘world’ and ‘strong’. It is very common in the northern province of Ulster, and also in the area which was the Kingdom of Thomond around counties Limerick and Clare. There, the Mc Donnells were hereditary poets to the royal O’ Brien clan. The name is one of the 100 most numerous surnames in Ireland, and is particularly popular in the county of Fermanagh in the north. |
