Murtagh, O' Moriarty, O' Muircheartaigh
Moriarty is the English version of the Irish O Muircheartaigh, made up of muir, ‘sea’ and ceardach, ‘skilled’ therefore ‘one skilled in the ways of the sea’. This name has always been associated with Co. Kerry. Their original territory lay on both sides of Castlemaine Harbour. Nowadays over 80% of Moriarty births are registered in County Kerry. |
