de Stapleton, Stapleton
The family ane Stapleton is derived from the Norman name of 'de stapeltoun, an old and distinguished anglo-norman family who settled, soon after the invasion, in Kilkenny and Tipperary. They assumed the Irish surname of mac an ghaill (which see), but were also called galldubh. Son of the foreigner' (irish 'gall'); is a variant of mac an ghoill which was the Irish name assumed by the Stapletons of County Tipperary, (Sloinnte Gaedheal is Gall). |
